UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — John H. Hopfield and Geoffrey E. Hinton earned the 2024 Nobel Prize in Physics for their “foundational discoveries and inventions that enable machine learning with artificial neural networks.”
Shortly following that announcement, James Z. Wang, distinguished professor of information sciences and technology, was invited to coauthor an opinion piece for the Cell Press journal Patterns. His article, “Hopfield and Hinton’s neural network revolution and the future of AI," was published today.
“Historically, the Nobel Prize has rarely recognized the field of computer science or AI, making this recognition not only a testament to their work but also a milestone for the entire computing community,” Wang wrote. “We are grateful for the opportunity to reflect on how Hopfield and Hinton’s work has profoundly influenced our research.”
