IST Staff Work Expectations and Overtime Guidelines

The College of IST is committed to supporting a healthy work-life balance for all employees while meeting the demands of our work. All full-time staff positions, whether exempt or non-exempt under FLSA guidelines, are generally expected to reflect a 40-hour workweek. The University’s official workweek runs from Sunday through Saturday, though most staff typically work on a Monday through Friday schedule.

Additional time may be needed during a given week to meet deadlines or respond to emerging priorities. In these cases, supervisors are encouraged to work collaboratively with their teams to prioritize tasks, reassign responsibilities as appropriate, and manage workloads thoughtfully. When possible, employees should flex their hours within the same workweek to remain at 40 total hours. For example, if an employee knows they will need to work additional hours on one day, they should adjust their remaining schedule to offset that time.

If an employee is scheduled to use vacation or sick time during the week and is required to work additional hours, they should adjust their requested leave accordingly to ensure their total reported time for the week does not exceed 40 hours.

Employees classified as non-exempt are eligible for overtime compensation for any hours worked over 40 in a workweek. All overtime must be approved in advance by the employee’s supervisor. IST supervisors may approve up to 5 hours of overtime per month for a non-exempt employee when justified by workload demands. If more than 5 hours of overtime is anticipated in a given month, the supervisor must obtain prior approval from the Dean. Supervisors must also account for all approved overtime spending within their unit budget.

Approved overtime for non-exempt staff is compensated at one and one-half times the employee’s regular hourly rate, in accordance with University Policy HR34.
