Research Administration

The College of IST fosters research that is culturally relevant, socially responsible, and scientifically grounded, while leveraging cutting-edge technology. Our work demands both broad and deep expertise, drawing on interdisciplinary perspectives and the appropriate tools to tackle complex problems from multiple angles and create meaningful impact.

The Office of Research supports IST researchers throughout the research lifecycle. This includes helping with proposal development, overseeing submission procedures, and managing post-award administration. As required by Penn State, all proposals must receive institutional approval and be submitted through the Office of Research before they can be formally submitted or awarded.

Award Lifecycle

  1. Find Funding

Access internal and external resources and explore funding opportunities to support your research.

  2. Proposal Submissions

All proposals, contracts, and agreements must be routed through appropriate University channels. The Office of Research has final signature authority on all extramural support grants, contracts, and agreements.

  3. Award Management

The Principal Investigator is responsible for ensuring that project expenses are allowable, allocable, and reasonable. Researchers should monitor expenditures, sub-agreements, award notifications, invoicing, and financial reporting.

  4. Award Closeout

Award closeouts generally require that a series of final reports be submitted to the project’s sponsor. It is essential that these be prepared and sent on time. The terms and conditions of the award will specify what should be sent, when, and to whom.
