This policy was drafted and approved by the Graduate Advisory Committee. It specifies the procedures and norms by which the College of IST will consider and approve R-status for research-active teaching faculty.
Membership
In a given year, the Graduate Faculty Nomination Evaluation Committee (GFNEC) shares the same membership as the Graduate Advisory Committee. Its meeting times also coincide with those of the Graduate Advisory Committee, such that graduate faculty nomination will in effect be part of the normal business of the Graduate Advisory Committee.
Nominations
Nominations for graduate faculty (“R”) status should include a cover letter and a CV. Together, they should articulate the nature of the active research and provide evidence of ongoing activity. Self-nominations are welcome.
Evaluation Criteria
The instructor must have a terminal degree. Further, the committee will evaluate whether a nominee meets the criteria for an active research agenda as a holistic judgment based on a critical mass of the following criteria (in no particular order):
- Currently serving as a PI or co-PI on an external or internal (e.g., seed) grant, with external grants generally weighted more than internal grants
- Number and quality of peer-reviewed publications in respectable venues published in the past 5 years
- Books, book chapters, and high-quality publications whose peer review may be harder to assess
- Magazine articles, posters, work in progress, late-breaking results, and similar
- Submitted grant proposals in the past 3 years, which may include external or internal, with the former weighted more than the latter
- Submitted papers currently under review in peer-reviewed venues
- Reviewing for journals, conferences, or funding agencies
Term of Duration
The Graduate Advisory Committee reviews the graduate status of a teaching faculty for every 5 years as part of the Faculty Annual Review (FAR) or when an individual’s research activities are rated as below expectations during the FAR process.
Maintenance of this Policy
This policy is maintained by the Graduate Advisory Committee and may be amended at any time as part of the committee’s normal business. Any amendment needs to be consulted with and approved by the Faculty Council. Any changes, ultimately, will need to be submitted to the Graduate School for approval.
