This course surveys the current state of data privacy from multiple perspectives, including technology, philosophy, ethics, and policy. We will talk about theoretical foundations, including conceptualizations of data privacy, principles and methods for privacy-preserving solutions. We particularly emphasize emerging issues in real-world applications. Specific topics to be covered include privacy attacks, rigorous state-of-the-art solutions, such as differential privacy, and what it would take (technically and socially) to build a privacy-preserving solution. The objective of the course is to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of the foundations of data privacy as well as necessary skills to continue developing their interests in data privacy. Students will be expected to apply themselves to both the technical and nontechnical materials with equal energy and enthusiasm.
