Over 60 percent of all English words have Greek or Latin roots; in the vocabulary of the sciences and technology, the figure rises to over 90 percent (Green, 2014). This course will provide you with a solid grasp of the technical vocabulary and knowledge to communicate effectively with colleagues, clients, and other professionals across information sciences, technology, and related fields. Through a series of interactive activities, you'll learn to understand, use, and apply essential information sciences and technology terms, abbreviations and concepts, including those related to Human Computer Interaction, a field that informs human-computer design and development, security and risk analysis, data sciences and AI, computer science, math, physics, chemistry, and technology in general. Improved vocabulary can help with on standardized tests, including the GRE and IT certificates such as the ITIL certification program. In addition, this course will explore the origins and roots of technical terms, including the borrowing of terms from Greek, Latin, and other languages as well as vocabulary used in these areas. Knowing roots helps learn new words, particularly technical words. The importance of the emergence of new terms with the development of scientific progress will also be discussed. Vocabulary lists will be updated every semester.
