Everything I wanted in a major
Chris S., Class of 2026
When I first came to college, I knew I wanted to focus on design, coding, and product development but wasn't sure in what context. Then I found Human-Centered Design and Development (HCDD), which has everything I want from my education—research, product design, and coding—and gives me the freedom to go in any direction!
Getting involved in research.
I've been a research assistant in The Human in Computing and Cognition (THiCC) Lab, which aims to understand how computing and cognitive systems exist and interact with people. This lab has a strong focus on the ways artificial intelligence and machine learning can both useful and detrimental effects. I'm researching academic papers related to AI and machine learning to learn more about development in trust and design.
The biggest thing I’ve gained from this lab experience is real-world exposure to what’s out there and applying what I’m learning in my classes. It’s provided access to a strong research methodology that helps with problem-solving, fact-checking, and presentations. And I have far more insight into AI—its issues, strengths, and creation—because of working in the lab.
Exploring academic and social opportunities
Early in my college career, I joined BLUEPrint, a peer mentorship organization in the Paul Robeson Cultural Center. The goal of the organization is to help first-year students get acquainted with the campus, socially and academically. After becoming a mentee in the club, I was exposed to a lot of different opportunities on campus, leading me to become a resident assistant, a Paul Robeson Cultural Center Student Ambassador, and an IST Diplomat!
Welcoming classroom environments
What I enjoy most about my IST classes is that the teachers and learning assistants create a welcoming environment where asking questions is celebrated as part of the learning process. I don't have to worry if I don't understand a topic because I know that the class is formatted for students to learn together and work through the questions they have. And the faculty do a great job of being approachable, open, and responsive to questions!
Every fall semester feels new and exciting
My favorite time on campus is fall semester! There are so many events and new things happening that every few weeks feels like a new story. Fall brings lots of club events, holidays, conferences, and new opportunities to get involved.
