IST student organizations enhance the co-curricular experience of IST students. To be officially recognized, all IST student organizations must first work with IST’s Office of Student Engagement and go through Penn State’s Office of Student Activities recognition process.
If you’re interested in starting a new student organization, follow these steps.
Develop an Organization Concept
Your organization should fill a gap in IST’s student engagement community rather than duplicate existing groups. Before moving forward, review the list of current IST student organizations to ensure your idea is unique. If your concept adds value, discuss it with a faculty or staff member who might serve as your adviser.
Submit an Organization Proposal
Complete the New IST Student Organization form to submit your idea. Once submitted, IST’s Office of Student Engagement will contact you to schedule a meeting. This meeting will provide guidance on creating your organization and explain both Penn State and IST requirements. While waiting, continue preparing the necessary student organization requirements.
Secure a Faculty/Staff Adviser
Your adviser must be a Penn State faculty or staff member knowledgeable about your organization’s subject area. Ask IST faculty and staff for recommendations, and discuss your organization’s purpose with potential advisers before formally asking them to take on the role.
Recruit Student Members
You need at least 10 University Park students, including required officers. Aim for a diverse mix of students from different class years and skill sets—experienced members can mentor newer ones, and younger members can step into leadership roles as officers graduate.
Appoint or Elect Officers
Your organization must have at least three officers: a president, vice president, and treasurer. You may establish additional positions as needed. While you can appoint initial officers, holding elections for inaugural members is recommended.
Complete the Recognition Process
All Penn State student organizations must be recognized by Penn State’s Office of Student Activities. The College of IST’s assistant director of student engagement will support your submission and review the requirements with you during your consultation meeting.
