Internship Program

Undergraduate students at University Park can complete one of these options to meet the internship requirement:

1. Participate in a single 240-hour internship
   1. The internship can be a part-time or full-time experience held virtually or in-person.
   2. The internship must be related to the College of IST curriculum to qualify for IST 495.
   3. You must register for IST 495 during the semester you are completing the internship.
   4. You must complete the IST 495 online course and CANVAS deliverables at the same time.
2. Participate in a faculty-developed 240-hour research project
   1. The project should be in collaboration with a faculty member to conduct research on a real-world problem.
   2. The experience can focus on a faculty-developed problem or case-based learning project.
   3. You must complete the IST 495 online course and CANVAS deliverables at the same time.
   4. Both you and the faculty member must submit an additional project contract in CANVAS.
3. ROTC Student Information
   1. ROTC students may use a combination of summer training and on-campus work to request registration to the IST 495 class.

Undergraduate students completing a bachelor's degree at World Campus can complete one of these options to meet the internship requirement:

1. Participate in a single 240-hour internship
   1. The internship can be a part-time or full-time experience held virtually or in-person.
   2. You may use a full-time position to complete this requirement if the work is related to the IST curriculum.
   3. You must register for IST 495 during the semester you are completing the internship.
   4. You must complete the IST 495 online course and CANVAS deliverables at the same time.
2. Submit Credit by Portfolio
   1. This option is appropriate for upper-level individuals who are able to build a portfolio of their professional work.
   2. If you have significant experience in the field, you may be able to substitute activities from your full-time position to fulfill the internship requirement.

Undergraduate students completing an associate degree at World Campus can complete one of these options to meet the internship requirement:

1. Complete IST 295A: Internship Project Class (Summer Session only)
   1. You an complete this option by enrolling in the class via LionPATH.
   2. Full class details are available in the Penn State Bulletin.
   3. Note that this class is not approved or managed by IST's Office of Career Solutions.
2. Participate in a single 150-hour internship
   1. The internship can be a part-time or full-time experience held virtually or in-person. You may use a full-time position to complete this requirement if the work is related to the IST curriculum. You must register for IST 295B during the semester you are completing the internship.You must complete the IST 295B online course and CANVAS deliverables at the same time.

Students are not permitted to receive academic credit for any work, research, or activity in violation of federal law, including work associated with marijuana. Employers involved in the hemp industry, however, may recruit students for both non-credit and credit bearing positions.
