Course Scheduling FAQs: Fall 2025

Frequently Asked Questions

Here you’ll find answers to frequently asked questions about when to schedule for fall, how to meet with your adviser, and the differences between enrollment requirements and prerequisites.

We’re here to help you plan your academic journey. If you’re unsure about any of the information below, be sure to meet with your adviser at least once a semester to discuss your academic goals and progress.

Registration begins March 26 and continues through April.

Your specific enrollment date can be found on your LionPATH homepage and is based on your total number of completed and in-progress credits.

Be sure to clear your To-Do List in LionPATH prior to your enrollment date so it doesn’t interfere with scheduling.

Make an appointment with your adviser in Starfish. Meetings are offered remotely on Zoom and in-person at the Chaiken Center (E103 Westgate Building). Meeting times fill quickly during the enrollment season, so schedule your appointment early. There could be a two-week wait or more to meet with your adviser. We also offer drop-in advising for quick questions, but all planning should be done in a scheduled appointment.

Starting this fall, some courses offered by the College of IST have been renamed. Course content has not changed, but the names now reflect their affiliated majors. For example, IST 451 is now CYBER 451. You can see the full list of name changes here.

Your major requirements can be found in LionPATH, and you should use these reports in conjunction with your major’s Suggested Academic Plan, found in the Bulletin.

  • If you’re in the pre-major: Find your major requirements by running a What-If Report. If your intended major is listed more than once, select the second option. Remember to include a subplan for Data Sciences, IST, or SRA.
  • If you have declared your major: Find your major requirements by running an Academic Requirements Report.

Most College of IST majors are under Administrative Enrollment Controls, which means they have entrance-to-major requirements. These requirements are time-sensitive, particularly for students in their third, fourth, and fifth semesters. Check the Bulletin and your What-If Report to track your progress. Work with your adviser to be sure you understand your entrance-to-major requirements and plan a path to complete them on time.

Using the validate button in Schedule Builder and in your LionPATH Enrollment Shopping Cart can identify enrollment issues beforehand so there’s time for you to make necessary adjustments. Read the error message to troubleshoot the issue. Most problems involve the enrollment requirements or prerequisites.

Many College of IST classes have enrollment requirements that specify who can enroll in the class. Enrollment requirements are based on your major and/or semester classification and are not the same as prerequisites. Each section of a class may have different enrollment requirements.

The example requirements below shows the enrollment information for IST 210. It specifies that students can enroll only if they are in semesters 3-11 and in one of the listed pre-majors or majors. Students who do not meet these requirements must find a different section or speak with their adviser about alternatives.

Example Enrollment Requirements

"Students must be in the following majors and meet semester classification 003-011:ENGR_PMAJ, LAPMAJ, SCIEN_PMAJ, INST_PMAJ,DATSC_BS or ISTBS_BS or in the following minors: ISCAS, IST, ISTIE, ISLER, ISASP, ISTLC, SCIST, ISHPA, ISEMS, or ISMTH."

Your semester classification is determined by the total number of completed and in-progress credits. Transfer credits, AP, CLEP, and IB credits count toward your total credits earned.

Your semester classification may impact when you register and which classes/sections you can enroll in.

Prerequisites are not the same as major and semester classification requirements. Prerequisites are the classes that must be completed before taking another class. Check the enrollment information before scheduling to make sure you have completed or are currently taking the listed prerequisite courses.

  • If you are trying to enroll in SRA 231, but you took SCM 200 instead of STAT 200, complete the Request Prerequisite Override form in LionPATH. Instructor permission is not required.

  • If you are trying to enroll in CYBER 221, but you took CMPSC 131 instead of IST 140, complete the Request Prerequisite Override form in LionPATH. Instructor permission is not required.
  • If you do not meet the stated prerequisites for any other class, you should plan to enroll in the prerequisites this semester to be prepared to take the class in the future. It might be possible to request a prerequisite override, but you will likely need instructor approval. Contact your adviser to discuss next steps.

Be proactive with your requests so your enrollment is not delayed.

If you can’t enroll in a class even though you’ve completed the prerequisites, it may be because you don’t meet the major or semester classification requirements. LionPATH shows an error message with the enrollment information for that class. Check to see if your major is listed. And if a particular semester classification is specified, check to see if you meet that requirement. Look at other sections of the same class to see if they have different enrollment controls.

Do not use the Request Prerequisite Override form for major and semester classification requirements. It will be denied. Contact your adviser to discuss your options.

Professors determine if students have adequate prior knowledge to succeed in their classes. That is why professor approval is needed for prerequisite override requests. However, a prerequisite override doesn’t guarantee enrollment. Many factors contribute to any particular student being able to add a specific class. It’s best to discuss these issues with your adviser.

University Park students are expected to enroll in a full schedule at University Park. Multiple Campus Enrollment doesn’t open until 7 days prior to the start of the fall or spring semesters. If your desired World Campus class is full at that time, you will not be able to request enrollment in it. Waiting on World Campus classes could jeopardize your academic progress.

Explore LionPATH Help for more functions that assist with enrollment.

For example, the swap feature permits LionPATH to add and drop a class for you simultaneously. This allows you to enroll in an open section and set up a swap with a waitlisted section. If a seat becomes available in the waitlisted section and you are in the first position on the waitlist, LionPATH will automatically add you to that section while the other section is dropped.
