Biography:

Dr. Jian Wu is an assistant teaching professor in the College of Information Sciences and Technology (IST) at the Pennsylvania State University (Penn State) since July 2017. He obtained his Ph.D. in Astronomy and Astrophysics from Penn State in 2011 and his B.S. in the University of Science and Technology of China in 2004. Before joining IST as a faculty, he was working as a postdoctoral scholar with Dr. C. Lee Giles. He worked as a DBA and then the tech leader of the CiteSeerX project since 2011.

Dr. Wu's research interest includes data science applied machine learning focusing on text mining of scholarly big data, semantic entity recognition and search, information retrieval, extraction, and classification, and search engine systems. He has published about 30 peer-reviewed papers including ACM, IEEE, and AAAI conferences proceedings, and journal articles. He published 6 articles in prestigious astronomical and astrophysical journals. 

Dr. Wu teaches IST140 (Introduction to Application Development), IST210 (Organization of Data), and co-teached IST441 (Information Retrieval and Search Engines) with Dr. C. Lee Giles in the past years. He is the committee chair of DS440 (Data Science Capstone).
