Full Course Development or Substantial Redesign for Critical Courses

If you are conducting a full course development or substantial redesign project for a critical course in IST, you may be eligible for a course release following the completion of development, or a supplemental salary during the development period.

To learn more about this process and whether your course may qualify for this assistance, please see Policy IST_AC-38.

Course Development Assistant (CDA) Wages Program

If you are looking to develop materials for a new, required course for an IST major, and you are not already receiving compensation for critical course development, you may be eligible for the Course Development Assistant (CDA) wages program.

A CDA is an undergraduate or graduate student who is hired to assist in the development, creation, and planning of course materials.

  • Note: A CDA is different from an LA or IA; CDAs will not be teaching the materials or assisting with course delivery, only with course preparation and development.
  • Note: Only Undergraduate and Masters students can be considered for CDA positions. PhD students are not eligible for this program.

The Associate Dean for Undergraduate Studies will provide funding for up to 300 hours of CDA wages to assist faculty during course development. Applications for this program are reviewed on a rolling basis. If you are interested in this program, contact your department head to discuss this option. If your department head encourages you to apply, please complete the following Smartsheet form prior to the intended course development period:

IST Teaching Development Grants

The IST Teaching Development Grant is an annual internal seed grant awarded by the ADUS, intended to support partial course revisions, development of new modules, and targeted instructional improvements within an existing course. The award can be used to fund research assistant wages, technology and software, and other miscellaneous costs associated with course development and revision.

This award prioritizes proposals which incorporate research-based best teaching practices for student success, AI introductory modules or assignments, and Universal Design for Learning principles.

Applications for the grant typically open in the Fall, are announced via email from the ADUS, and are submitted via InfoReady. Awards will be issued on a competitive basis, based on short proposals and peer review.

For more information on the Teaching Development Grant, please contact Sam Muller (scm5578@psu.edu).
