SRA Entrance Requirements

You are here

First-semester baccalaureate students are admitted to the College of Information Sciences and Technology (IST) in the pre-major (INFST). Entrance-to-Major Criteria are determined for every entering class within an academic year (summer, fall, and spring). Students who meet a major’s entry criteria are guaranteed entry to the major.

Students who wish to return to Penn State as an undergraduate student after missing at least one fall or spring semester (Re-enrollment) or have had a four-year calendar absence (Academic Renewal) must follow the latest entrance to major requirements. For example, a student who was admitted to Penn State Fall 2016 planning to major in ISTBS and did not enroll in Spring 2017 semester or submit a Leave of Absence, but wishes to return Fall 2017, would follow the Entrance to Major requirements for students entering Penn State Summer 2017 or after.

Entrance to Pre Major, INFST

The requirements to enter the college in premajor status are:

  • 2.00 cumulative grade-point average (CGPA)
  • Complete one-half unit of trigonometry (or advanced math, precalc, or calc) in high school or pass MATH 022, 026, or 110

Entrance to Major (ETM) requirements to the SRA major at University Park

At least a 2.75 cumulative grade-point average. Credit window: 40-70 cumulative credits. A grade of C or better in each of the following courses:

  • IST 110 or 110S: Information, People and Technology
  • IST 140 Introduction to Application Development or CMPSC 101 Introduction to C++ Programming or CMPSC 121 Introduction to Programming Techniques
  • SRA 111: Introduction to Security and Risk Analysis
  • SRA 211: Threat of Terrorism and Crime

Entrance to Major Procedure

A student who wishes to enter a major with Administrative Enrollment Controls will use LionPATH’s “Update Academics” to request entrance to the major. To participate in this process, students will actively request entrance to administratively controlled majors when they are within an established credit window, have completed specified courses, and have earned the stated grade-point average.

College of Enrollment - Students who apply for entrance to a controlled major must be enrolled in the college offering that major or in the Division of Undergraduate Studies (DUS). Students who want to be considered for controlled majors in more than one college should enroll in DUS to be eligible for consideration.

If a student is combining a major that is under administrative enrollment controls, the student must enter the controlled major first. It is not possible for the student to incorporate more than one major that is under administrative enrollment controls in a concurrent majors program.

Requirements for Conditional Approval into an IST major

Students apply for their major of choice upon meeting the following:

  1. Must be enrolled at Penn State as a pre-major (INFST) student in the College of Information Sciences and Technology (IST) or in the Division of Undergraduate Studies (DUS).
  2. Complete or be currently enrolled in all Entrance to Major courses, including obtaining grades of “C” or better in specified courses.
  3. Attain a cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 2.75 or higher for ISTBS or SRA. DATSC Applied requires a 2.00 cumulative grade point average. This cumulative GPA must also be met at the conclusion of the entrance to major process.
  4. Students may only apply for ISTBS or SRA Major upon earning a minimum of 44 cumulative credits but no more than 59 cumulative credits earned at Penn State and have all entrance to major courses either completed or in progress.

If all of the above are met, the student will receive a conditional offer through Update Academics in LionPATH. The student must successfully complete his/her remaining entrance to major courses and achieve a 2.75 or higher (ISTBS or SRA) or 2.00 or higher (DATSC Applied) cumulative grade point average at the conclusion of the semester for the conditional approval to be confirmed. If entrance to major criteria is not successfully completed, the student will be changed back to their prior academic status and must explore other alternatives.

Requirements for Final, Confirmed Approval into a College of IST major

Students receive a final approval for a College of IST major upon meeting the following:

  1. Must be enrolled at Penn State as a pre-major (INFST) student in the College of Information Sciences and Technology (IST) or in the Division of Undergraduate Studies (DUS).
  2. Complete all Entrance to Major courses, including obtaining grades of “C” or better in specified courses.
  3. Attain a cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 2.75 or higher for ISTBS or SRA majors except DATSC Applied (DATSC_BS APPDS) which requires a GPA of 2.00.
  4. Students may only apply for an ISTBS or SRA major upon earning a minimum of 44 cumulative credits but no more than 59 cumulative credits earned at Penn State and meeting the entrance to major criteria. A minimum 29.1 Penn State earned credits is required for entrance to DATSC Applied.*

* If entrance to major criteria is not successfully completed, the student will be changed back to their prior academic status.

Cumulative Credits

Matriculating from pre-major status to enrollment in a major is contingent upon the timing and completion of cumulative credits at Penn State.

  • Advanced Placement (AP) credits and credits earned at other institutions are included in Total Credits but are not included in the cumulative credit total.
  • Once a minimum of 44 cumulative credits but no more than 59 cumulative credits are earned and entrance to major criteria is met, students apply for a major.
  • Typically the application period (44-59 credits) is during the spring semester of the second year of study.
  • Students who have completed 59.1 or more cumulative credits who are still in pre-major status become ineligible to apply for the ISTBS or SRA major and will become ineligible to continue their enrollment in the college.
