Entrance to Pre Major, INFST

The requirements to enter the college in premajor status are:

  • 2.00 cumulative grade-point average (CGPA)
  • Complete one-half unit of trigonometry (or advanced math, precalc, or calc) in high school or pass MATH 022, 026, or 110

Entrance to Major (ETM) requirements to the HCDD major at University Park

  • 2.00 CUMGPA
  • A grade of C or better in each of the following courses:
    • HCDD 113S or HCDD 113
    • IST 140 or (CMPSC 101 and IST 240) or CMPSC 121 or CMPSC 131
    • IST 210
    • IST 220
    • IST 242 or CMPSC 122 or CMPSC 132
    • STAT 200

Entrance to Major Procedure

A student who wishes to enter this major will use LionPATH’s “Update Academics” to request entrance to the major. To participate in this process, students must have completed at least 29.1 credits will actively request entrance to this major when they are within an established credit window, have completed specified courses, and have earned the stated grade-point average.

 

Requirements for Conditional Approval into the HCDD major

Students apply for their major of choice upon meeting the following:

  1. Complete or be currently enrolled in all Entrance to Major courses, including obtaining grades of “C” or better in specified courses.
  2. Attain a cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 2.00 or higher. This cumulative GPA must also be met at the conclusion of the entrance to major process.
  3. Applicants will not be approved unless the student has earned at least 29.1 cumulative credits at the time of application.

If all of the above are met, the student will receive a conditional acceptance through Update Academics in LionPATH. The student must successfully complete his/her remaining entrance to major courses and achieve a 2.00 or higher cumulative grade point average at the conclusion of the semester for the acceptance to be confirmed. If Entrance to Major criteria is not successfully completed, the student will be changed back to their prior academic status and may have to explore alternative majors.


Requirements for Final, Confirmed Approval into the HCDD major

Students receive a final approval for a College of IST major upon meeting the following:

  1. Complete all Entrance to Major courses, earning grades of “C” or better in specified courses.
  2. Attain a cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 2.00 or higher.
  3. Students may only apply for an HCDD major upon earning a minimum of 29.1 credits at Penn State and meeting the additional Entrance to Major criteria. Advanced Placement (AP) credits and credits earned at other institutions are included in total credits but are not included in the credit total required to meet the Entrance to Major criteria.

*If Entrance to Major criteria is not successfully completed, the student will be changed back to their prior academic status.


Cumulative Credits

Matriculating from pre-major status to enrollment in a major is contingent upon the timing and completion of cumulative credits at Penn State.

  • Cumulative credits toward your GPA are credits (courses) taken at Penn State.
  • Advanced Placement (AP) credits and credits earned at other institutions are included in total credits but are not included in the cumulative credit total.
  • Typically the application period is during the fall or spring semester of the second year of study.
