Entrance to Major Procedure

A student who wishes to enter a major with Administrative Enrollment Controls will use LionPATH’s “Update Academics” to request entrance to the major. To participate in this process, students will actively request entrance to administratively controlled majors when they are within an established credit window, have completed specified courses, and have earned the stated grade-point average.

Requirements for Conditional Approval into CYSOP major.

Students apply for their major of choice upon meeting the following:

  1. Must be enrolled at Penn State as a pre-major (INFST) student in the College of Information Sciences and Technology (IST) or in the Division of Undergraduate Studies (DUS).
  2. Complete or be currently enrolled in all Entrance to Major courses, including obtaining grades of “C” or better in specified courses.
  3. Attain a cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 3.00 or higher. This cumulative GPA must also be met at the conclusion of the entrance to major process.
  4. Conditional applications will not be approved unless the student has earned at least 40 cumulative credits, but no more than 70 at the time of application.

If all of the above are met, the student will receive a conditional acceptance through Update Academics in LionPATH. The student must successfully complete his/her remaining entrance to major courses and achieve a 3.00 or higher cumulative grade point average at the conclusion of the semester for the acceptance to be confirmed. If entrance to major criteria is not successfully completed, the student will be changed back to their prior academic status and may have to explore alternative majors

Requirements for Final, Confirmed Approval into a College of IST major

Students receive a final approval for a College of IST major upon meeting the following:

  1. Must be enrolled at Penn State as a pre-major (INFST) student in the College of Information Sciences and Technology (IST) or in the Division of Undergraduate Studies (DUS).
  2. Complete all Entrance to Major courses, earning grades of “C” or better in specified courses.
  3. Attain a cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 3.00 or higher.
  4. Students may only apply for an ISTBS major upon earning a minimum of 40 cumulative credits but no more than 70 cumulative credits and meeting the entrance to major criteria.

* If entrance to major criteria is not successfully completed, the student will be changed back to their prior academic status.

Cumulative Credits

Progressing from pre-major status to enrollment in the major is contingent upon the timing and completion of cumulative credits at Penn State.

  • Cumulative credits are credits (courses) taken at Penn State (all commonwealth campuses).
  • Advanced Placement (AP) credits and credits earned at other institutions (transfer credits) are included in total credits but are not included in the cumulative credit total.
  • Once a minimum of 40 cumulative credits but no more than 70cumulative credits are earned and entrance to major criteria is met, students apply for a major.
  • Typically the application period (40-70 credits) is during the spring semester of the second year of study.
  • Students who have completed 70.1or more cumulative credits who are still in pre-major status become ineligible to apply for the ISTBS major and will become ineligible to continue their enrollment in the college.

First-semester baccalaureate students are admitted to the College of Information Sciences and Technology (IST) in the pre-major (INFST). They are eligible to apply for entrance to CYAOP major once they have earned 29.1 Penn State credits, earned a C or better in required Entrance to Major courses and have a minimum 2.00 cumulative grade-point average.
