Concurrent Majors

You are here

Concurrent MajorsA Concurrent Majors Program is one in which students take courses to concurrently meet the requirements of at least two majors, with graduation for all majors in the program occurring during the same semester. Concurrent majors must be all at the baccalaureate degree level or all at the associate degree level. Upon completion of the Concurrent Majors Program, a student shall receive a diploma for each major.

Requests for a concurrent major or majors can be made, at the earliest, once the student has been approved for their primary major and has met the Entrance to Major requirements for the concurrent major. This varies depending on the primary college of enrollment and entrance to major criteria.

The addition of a concurrent major may extend graduation dates and students agree to the tentative Academic Plans and timelines that they submit.

Application requirements for Concurrent major – ISTBS or SRA

  1. Students pursuing the ISTBS or SRA degree may request to add another major that is not under Administrative Enrollment Controls.  Majors that are under enrollment control include ISTBS and SRA.

  2. Students outside the College of IST can request a Concurrent Major in ISTBS or SRA if they meet the following requirements:
  • Achieved a cumulative grade-point average (CGPA) of 2.75.
  • Completed one-half unit of trigonometry or higher at the high school level or successfully completed MATH 22 or higher at the college level
  • Completed, or are scheduled to complete, the Entrance to Major courses as listed below.  A grade of “C” or higher must be earned in each course.
    • ISTBS: IST 110, IST 210 and IST 220
    • SRA: IST 110, SRA 111 and SRA 211

ISTBS or SRA students want to pursue a second degree must choose a major outside the College of IST.

Concurrent majors are not available for Data Sciences-Applied or Cybersecurity Analytics and Operations.

Concurrent Major Procedure

  • A students request to add a concurrent major is made in LionPATH.  Located in the Student Center select Update Academics from the Other Academic drop-down menu and follow the directions to ADD a Concurrent Major to your current academic program. Information on how to use Update Academics can be found on the LionPATH Help page.
  • An email will be sent to the student’s PSU email from the IST Advising Center acknowledging receipt of the request and asking for the student to complete the Concurrent Major Academic Plan that lists the courses that will satisfy the requirements for each of the majors.
  • Print and legibly complete as much of the Academic Plan as possible. All courses needed for the first and second majors need to be listed on the planning form. Run a What If audit and use the Recommended Academic Plan for the major and option you wish to study for references. Students then meet with their assigned adviser and an adviser for the concurrent major to review the plan for completeness.
  • Once completed, the plan can be emailed to advising@ist.psu.edu, or dropped off in the IST Advising Center, E101 – Westgate Building.  A final review and approval will be granted once all entrance requirements are completed.  The student’s record will reflect the addition of the concurrent major in LionPATH.

Please note the Academic Plan is an educational tool to help highlight required pre-requisites and course sequencing. Submission of this plan and acceptance into the concurrent major does NOT ensure that courses will be available or completed in the manner that is listed on the plan. Course scheduling conflicts may arise and courses for the concurrent major are accessible on a space available basis. Therefore, successful completion of a concurrent major within any timeframe cannot be guaranteed.  If you need to complete degree requirements for both majors within a traditional 4 year window, you may need to consider other options, which may include a sequential degree, or a minor.

These plans need to be thoughtful and accurate. Students need to adhere to course prerequisites and course sequencing. In addition, students need to understand that balancing the number of IST and/or SRA courses per semester is expected. Semester planning should be based on 19 credit limit per semester. Due to out of class time required and the number of projects in IST and SRA courses it is in the best interest of the student to schedule no more than three IST/SRA courses per semester.

Students will not have access to IST and SRA courses until all entrance requirements are completed and the concurrent major is approved.
