Advising Appointment Preparation

  • Review Academic Requirements or What-if Report in LionPATH (degree audit) which can be accessed from Student Center.
  • Look over the information about majors, options and minors in the College of IST on the IST Students Undergraduate page.
  • Learn more about Minors and minor requirements using MinorQuest.
  • Discussions about Education Abroad should occur after students have read through materials provided by the Global Programs Office.
  • Draft semester by semester plans that include your educational goals and graduation timeline using the recommended academic plans.

Quick-Question Advising

The IST Advising Office will provide Walk-in Advising hours on Wednesdays 9:00am-11:00am and 1:00pm-3:00pm in E101 Westgate Building during the Fall 2017 and Spring 2018 semester beginning Wednesday September 6, 2017. Students can check in at the kiosk in E101 Westgate Building. These designated walk-in times are intended to be 10 minute or less conversations. Appropriate questions and discussions could include reviewing current semester schedule, entrance to major requirements, add/drop courses and general education.

Email and Academic Advising

Email can be a very quick and efficient way to have your advising questions answered; however, some questions are better addressed during a scheduled advising appointment.

Appropriate questions for email

  • How do I find my Enrollment Appointment?
  • How do I set my Intent to Graduate?
  • Referrals to other offices
  • Follow-up on appointments and/or petitions

Inappropriate questions for email

  • What courses should I schedule?
  • What courses do I still need to graduate?
  • Does my current schedule look good?
  • Am I on track to graduate on time?
  • What minor should I declare?

Additional notes about email

  • Always use your Penn State email address. This is the only way the Advising Office can be sure it’s you.
  • Include content in the subject line. An email without a subject line may be treated as SPAM by an email server.
  • Please email one adviser, instead of an entire advising team to get your questions answered. In addition, use BCC with caution.
  • Advisers, like many other members of university staff keep hours between 8:00am and 5:00pm Monday through Friday (standard business hours and days), so that is when they will likely be reading and responding to emails. It is reasonable to expect a response within 1-2 business days. During peak times in the semester (beginning of the semester and scheduling period) it is highly likely that email response time will be slower. Please account for that when contacting advisers. If you email your adviser Saturday night, do not expect an answer on Sunday.
  • Appropriate email etiquette includes not using texting shortcuts.
