NOTE: Grading for IST 295 / IST 495 will be changing effective Summer 2019.  Course requirements will remain the same.  Please read below for specifics and contact the Office of Career Solutions & Corporate Engagement with any questions.

  • Employer Evaluation
Online evaluation form submitted by your employer. It will be your responsibility to provide this link to your supervisor.
  • Student Evaluation
Online student evaluation form to be completed by you.
  • Online Discussions in Canvas
Throughout the semester you will be asked to participate in several online discussions. The number of discussions will vary based on your section. The purpose of the online discussion boards is to allow you to share your internship experience and to gain valuable insight on the internships of your classmates.
  • Online Professional Development Modules
Several short on-line professional development modules that you will be required to complete. These modules will be found in Canvas.

You must complete 300 hours of work within the allotted semester(s) and complete all of the course requirements in Canvas to a minimum average score of 70% or higher to receive the satisfactory (SA) completion of the IST 495 requirement. If the you receive a grade above a 70%, but have not met the hourly requirement, credit cannot be
given for the course.

All deliverables will be due prior to the last day of class of the semester in which you are completing your internship for credit. Due dates for deliverables will be posted in Canvas, the course management system. Your grade will be impacted if deliverables are not completed and turned in by the due date. You can take a maximum of two consecutive semesters to complete the 300 hour internship requirement with prior permission from the Office of Career Solutions and Corporate Engagement.

  • What is changing?
The grading system for IST 295/495 will change from the conventional letter grade system to a Satisfactory/Unsatisfactory (SA/UN) grading system. This is for University Park, World Campus and select campus locations ONLY and is effective starting summer 2019 and beyond.
  • Why is the grading system changing?
IST 295/495 is an academic requirement for College of IST degree programs. However, student internship experiences occur at the place of employment where the internship is offered. Performance is assessed in a professional performance review-style assessment, not on a qualitative academic grading scale. Therefore, the current conventional letter grade system does not appropriately match the measurement of assessment or success in the internship.
  • What does this mean for me?
If you plan to complete your internship requirement in summer 2019 or beyond, the grading system will be SA/UN. You still must complete the minimum required hours for the course (150 hours for IST 295 and 300 hours for IST 495). Students who receive a satisfactory (SA) grade and wish to take another internship may register for IST 295/495 in the SA/UN grading scale*. However, if a student receives an unsatisfactory grade (UN), they must repeat the course for a conventional letter grade as per University Policy 49-60. Consult with a career or academic adviser if you receive an UN for IST 295/495 before registering for the course again.
  • What if I’ve already completed IST 295/495 before summer 2019?
Students who completed IST 295 or IST 495 and received a conventional letter grade on their transcript before summer 2019 may count the course toward their degree requirements, even if they are planning to transfer to University Park or World Campus in summer 2019 or beyond.
  • I have an internship for the summer and plan to complete IST 295/495 during the summer semester. Do I have to pay for the 1.0 credit separately?
Yes, students who register for IST 295/495 during the summer semester will receive a separate tuition invoice. The costs of the course are not factored into a fall or spring tuition invoice.

*There is a limit of 12.0 credits for a bachelor’s degree and 6.0 credits for an associate degree in the SA/UN grading scale.

If you anticipate a delay in the submission of any of your materials by the posted due date, you must email to request an extension.

Be sure to include:

  • your name and PSU ID
  • semester you are enrolled in IST 495
  • the semester that you now intend to complete the internship
  • the reason for deferral (i.e. need additional time to complete the 300 minimum requirement)

Missed deadlines are not tolerated unless you contact our office first, using the email address above. If you receive an extension, your grade will appear on your transcript as a Deferred Grade (DF) until the grading is complete. Once your materials are received, you will receive a grade which will then be reflected on your transcript.
