Registration Process

You are here

An internship is career-related professional work experience that enhances your education by giving you experience applying your knowledge and skills in the workplace. The advantages of taking an internship are endless. Internships serve as stepping stones for your future.

Internships can be part-time or full-time, paid or unpaid, credit-earning or noncredit-earning. Students usually schedule internships for one semester or during the summer.

As a College of IST student, you must take at least one internship for credit, with a minimum 300 hours of career-related work experience, to meet degree requirements. You may earn academic credit toward your degree with each IST internship you complete. If you are enrolled in an IST bachelor's-degree program, you may participate in as many as three internships. This means you can gain the equivalent of a full year of career-related experience by the time you graduate.

Steps to an Internship

Step One: Find an Internship

  • Use the Internship Office resources to register on the Compass job posting system for viewing and applying to IST-specific internship postings. (Log in to Compass to begin your registration.)
  • Network with family and friends or faculty contacts to find a position on your own.
  • Attend Penn State's Career Days (fall and spring) to find internship opportunities.

If you would like to meet with someone in the Office of Career Solutions & Corporate Engagement, please call 814-865-4509 or email

Step Two: Gain Approval for Your Internship

Send an e-mail indicating the name of the company you will be interning with, a brief description of the job, the number of hours you will be working and the semester(s) in which you will be completing the internship.  World Campus students, this is also what you should do if you are requesting approval of a current full-time position for your internship.

Step Three: Register for Internship Credit

Once the internship is reviewed, the Office of Career Solutions and Corporate Engagement will send you a registration link so you can be registered for IST 495. Upon completion of the application an email will be sent to your supervisor for employer verification of the internship.

Please see the Internship Resources block at the bottom of this page for additional information about Academic Verifications and Affiliation Agreements which are required by some employers.

After your employer has verified your internship, we will register you for IST 495 and send you an email with the required deliverables. You must keep this email for your records. The deliverables must be completed prior to the last day of classes for the semester in which you are registered for the internship credit.

Please remember that IST 495 is a one-credit internship course; therefore, tuition charges and associated fees apply. Rates for tuition, information technology fees, and activity fees can be viewed on the Tuition and Fees Schedule.

Step Four: Complete the Requirements for the Grade

Refer to the email you received with the requested deliverables. If you have misplaced the email, you will need to email

PLEASE NOTE: These deliverables must come directly from the Office of Career Solutions and Corporate Engagement. The links are directly connected to your Penn State Access ID.
