In the Media: Kelley Cotter on the American TikTok app
Where: The New York Times, "There's a new American TikTok. What does that mean for you?"
Who: Kelley Cotter, assistant professor in the Department of Human-Centered Computing and Social Informatics in the College of Information Sciences and Technology, was quoted in an article about the new American TikTok app.
What: TikTok's Chinese parent company has sold a majority stake in its U.S. operations to avoid a ban in the United States. The more than 200 million Americans who use the short-form video app will not have to download a new version. However, the app's algorithm will be retrained on American users' data, and, according to Cotter, "even small tweaks could at least change the quality of the experience."
