IST began as an interdisciplinary college and has remained that way for more than 25 years. Now, with more students and majors than ever, the college has created three official departments to help manage its continuous growth.
“These departments have long existed on paper, and now we’ve come together to build them organizationally,” said Andrea Tapia, dean. “Each faculty member selected a department to serve as their academic home, and interim department heads have been named. We’ll spend the next several months building responsibilities and support for these new departments.”
Here are the new departments, their interim department heads, and their majors:
Human-Centered Computing and Social Informatics
Informatics and Intelligent Systems
Privacy and Cybersecurity Informatics

Lasting Legacies
In a University founded in 1855, the 25-year-old College of IST is relatively young. But it’s old enough to bid farewell to more than 100 years of collective experience. Six individuals who played key roles in the college’s growth retired or resigned during the 2024-25 academic year.
