"Leveling Up: Advancing Upstream Health Informatics Interventions to Promote Health and Healthcare Equity”

This talk outlines a research program to develop, implement, and evaluate novel sociotechnical interventions—including both technological and human elements—for health and healthcare equity. Interventions emanating from this research program focus “upstream,” addressing the structural and social determinants of health. The research uses a “community health informatics” approach, which is grounded in community and clinical engagement, interdisciplinary team science, social and behavioral sciences theory, mixed methods, and translational impact. The presentation highlights examples of research contributions focused on upstream intervention targets in health systems, living conditions, and social networks. The talk also touches on the conceptual and methodological advances enabling these contributions. The presentation will conclude with future directions for this research program.
