Course Topic: AI-enhanced Virtual and Augmented Reality
This course explores artificial intelligence (AI) for virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR). In the first half of the course, students will gain foundational knowledge of VR and AR systems through lectures, which cover the graphical rendering pipelines, display technologies, spatial computing techniques, sensing algorithms, and how user studies inform system design and evaluation. The second half of the course is research-focused, engaging students with papers on VR and AR, such as generative models for 3D content creation, intelligent agents in virtual 3D environments, and human–AI interaction in immersive environments. A major component of the course will be a final project where students develop their own VR and AR systems based on the design practices discussed during the course. Through discussions, hands-on projects, and a final project presentation, students will develop an understanding of how VR and AR systems function under the hood, and how AI can enhance the design of intelligent and interactive VR and AR experiences.
