Digital technologies have long provided tools to enhance the artful expression of humans. AI represents a different category of tool; it presents the possibility of machines as partners in creative processes and performances.
With the Semiquincentennial in mind, we will explore the changing boundaries between technology, the arts, and the human experience. We will ask questions such as: how might our ideas about being human influence and be influenced by technologies, including AI and embodied AI; what historical narratives inform our present interactions with technology; why are cultural and kinesthetic vocabularies difficult to extend into post-human contexts; and what are the ethics of post-human collaborations. Students will discuss, express, present, and perform the results of extended collaborations between humans and machines.
