HCDD 115: As AI systems become more widespread, concerns grow about their embedded values, the soundness of their decisions, and the extent to which they benefit or disadvantage different groups . While much AI research has focused on replicating or replacing human performance, Human-Centered AI (HCAI) emphasizes the roles of human agency and human values in shaping the design and use of AI-powered tools and systems. HCAI focuses on amplifying, augmenting, and enhancing human performance in ways that make systems reliable, safe, and trustworthy.
This course argues that HCAI systems should be designed through user-centered participatory design methods which engage a diverse range of stakeholders. The design of HCAI systems can be approached through various methods, including participatory design, focus groups, interviews, usability studies, and observations
