A-I 341W: From LLMs to hiring algorithms to predictive policing, AI is increasingly responsible for shaping how we work, learn, and are governed. This impact has made "Responsible AI" a fixture in job postings and policy documents, but what does it actually mean in practice?
This class will give you the knowledge and language to answer that question for yourself. We will critically examine the social, political, and economic dimensions of AI systems while developing practical skills for building and deploying them more responsibly. Students will learn to trace how design choices (what data to collect, what to optimize for, who to consult) produce real consequences for real communities while building fluency in the political and economic forces that shape AI development. Students will leave this class able to evaluate proposed AI projects, articulate ethical concerns to colleagues and stakeholders, and have concrete strategies for acting on them in their careers.
