EAGER: Analysis and Intelligent Search for Cypriot Works of Art and Secretariat Corpus

The main goal of this NSF EAGER project is to develop novel prototypes for (1) iconic image analysis and recognition for managing and retrieval of the digital images of Cypriot works of art, and (2) searching and exploring the Ancient Cypriot Secretariat Corpus. Computer scientists, archeologists and art historians from Penn State and the Cyprus Institute will work together. New methods for efficient matching hierarchical representations of objects in images will be developed. Shape-based features will be modeled for machine-assisted tagging of these images. Images from some of the most significant archeological sites throughout Cyprus will be used to develop the techniques and to evaluate the research findings. An online prototype Web-based service will be provided to the archeology and art history researchers as well as to the general public. The system will allow user to search for the iconic images in the Cypriot culture based on the image content, shape sketches, and the metadata. From the Secretariat Corpus, end-users will be able to search for items belonging to different categories, like, daily life, mythology, religion, politics, language, landscape, events, etc.
