Dr. Nancy M. Lorenzi, professor of biomedical informatics at Vanderbilt University, will give a talk titled "A Brief Overview of Health Informatics: Past, Present, and Future."
Abstract:
The government’s proposed $19 billion for health information technology has placed the discipline of health informatics on center stage. Dr. Nancy M. Lorenzi will present a brief overview of multidisciplinary nature of health informatics, starting with its origins. She will also share information about the state of health informatics, including successes and current issues. Finally, Dr. Lorenzi will outline some of the challenges and opportunities that must be addressed in the future.
Biography:
Nancy M. Lorenzi, MLS, MA, Ph.D., is Professor of Biomedical Informatics, Assistant Vice Chancellor for Health Affairs, and Clinical Professor of Nursing at Vanderbilt since May, 2000. In her role as Assistant Vice Chancellor, she is leading informatics-centric organizational change and knowledge management initiatives. In October 2002 she was elected a President-elect of the International Medical Informatics Association. She will be President from the end of the Medinfo meeting in 2004 until 2007.
Research Interests:
Change management related to information technology - more specifically, with respect to organizational and personnel issues related to automation in the health care industry. Dr. Lorenzi is internationally recognized as a top expert on those areas.
