John M. "Jack" Carroll, Edward M. Frymoyer professor of information sciences and technology, was recently appointed Shaw Professor of Information Systems in the School of Computing at the National University of Singapore.

The visiting professor appointment is for October and November 2009 and will allow Carroll to explore the school's research areas, which include culture and information systems, electronic government and user-database interaction.

Carroll is co-director of the College of Information Sciences and Technology's Laboratory for Computer Supported Collaboration and Learning and director of Penn State's Center for Human-Computer Interaction. His research examines the impact of technology on communities; he and his team have created wireless community networks for the Central Pennsylvania Festival of the Arts and the First Night celebration in State College, Pa -- allowing patrons of these events to connect with each other through smart phones.
