Heng Xu, Jens Grossklags, and Na Wang’s article, “Third-Party Apps on Facebook: Privacy and the Illusion of Control,” was recently accepted by the ACM Symposium on Computer-Human Interaction for Management of Information Technology. The conference was held in December in Boston.
Xu, assistant professor of IST, Grossklags, assistant professor of IST, and Wang, an IST Ph.D. student, examined the threats associated with third-party apps on Facebook. They collected data from popular applications on Facebook, created their own Facebook application and identified problems with the applications in relation to privacy.
They proposed new interfaces for third-party apps, which would allow users to control the applications access to private information and alert users when their privacy is in jeopardy.
