Richard F. Dempsey has been named the first recipient of the University-wide Faculty Award by the Penn State School of Information Sciences and Technology (IST).
Dempsey, a member of the faculty at the University's Worthington Scranton campus, was recognized for his efforts to improve peoples' lives through his teaching, research, and outreach, and for fostering the school's goal of developing leaders for the digital, global economy. He was selected for this award from among 100 members of the IST faculty serving at 19 campuses across the Commonwealth.
Dempsey has served as a Penn State faculty member for 31 years and played a role in the development of the IST program prior to its launch in 1999. Penn State Worthington Scranton now offers both IST's two-year, associate degree program and four-year, bachelor's degree program.
Serving as IST division head for the Penn State Commonwealth College, Dempsey is an assistant professor of information sciences and technology, IST champion at the Worthington Scranton campus, and a member of both the Commonwealth College Technology Solutions Group and Commonwealth College Senate.
He has been the recipient of the Gertrude Hawk Service Award, the Commonwealth Education System Advising Award, and Worthington Scranton Campus Advisory Board Teaching Award. He also was named Commonwealth College Penn Stater of the Quarter.
Dempsey is active in the ACM, SIGCSE, AITP EDSIG, and Great Valley Technology Alliance.
