If email seems to have been around forever, it has. And teens who accompany their parents to work on April 24 will find out just how old it is as part of a Web Scavenger Hunt designed by the School of Information Sciences and Technology (IST).
The scavenger hunt is part of the 45-minute session designed by IST's Solutions Institute to introduce sixth through twelve graders to information technology as part of the university's "Take Our Daughters and Sons to Work Day." Email is only one of the technologies teens will learn about. "Many kids think of technology as instant messaging and email and may not understand the jobs out there that require specific technology skills," said Malena Moore, e-Learning Coordinator with the Solutions Institute. "We want to show kids how you can turn something that is fun into a career."
Besides searching the Web during the scavenger hunt, the program features Eileen Trauth, professor of IST, who plans to discuss career opportunities in IT, and information about the Pennsylvania Governor's School in Information Technology held annually during the summer at University Park.
Scholars in the governor's school learn about robotics and networking as well as participate in service-learning projects that range from movie making to designing a prototype for hand-held wireless devices for emergency medical technicians.
