IST has taken its first step toward developing research programs and expertise in medical informatics, an emerging and multidisciplinary field, with the help of the Raymond and Diana Tronzo Endowment for Medical Informatics in IST.
The initiative, “The Body Electric,” will study the impact of computational innovations on everything from organizational decisions underlying health insurance and patient confidentiality issues to the design of novel machinery. Research areas include interactive imaging technologies, mobile/handheld computing in care-delivery contexts, and empowering patient health maintenance.
Future plans include collaborations with other academic units at Penn State as well as with researchers at the Penn State Milton S. Hershey Medical Center.
Medical informatics involves the development of methods and systems for the acquisition, communication, and use of medical information.
