Senior Derek Switzer, an IST minor, has been awarded a 2004 GEICO Achievement Award. The Schreyer’s Honors student was selected for the scholarship for his demonstrated academic excellence and commitments to campus and community.
A Lion Ambassador and secondary mathematics major, Switzer received the scholarship after submitting an essay he wrote about student teaching in an inner-city Pittsburgh high school in fall 2004.
“My achievement is [my students’] success,” he wrote.
Switzer credited his IST minor and experiences working in teams with helping him develop relationships with parents and faculty members at the high school where he taught.
