Henry Schacht likened the challenge of exploding information technologies to driving a race car at increasingly fast speeds in a fog.
“Information is coming at us so fast that we have no idea how to distinguish between information and knowledge which is what we really want,” said Schacht, former chairman and CEO of Lucent Technologies.
The third speaker in IST’s Distinguished Lecture Series, Schacht shared his insights on the impact of technology on societies and organizations to a full house in the Cybertorium Nov. 10.
“While we long for stability from the pace of change, we need a climate that celebrates constant, often sudden change,” Schacht said. “People need to develop a capacity to deal comfortably with this accelerated pace and with information that is not fully understood.”
Schacht and his wife are benefactors to IST. The Schacht-Hintz scholarship is available to undergraduate students enrolled or planning to enroll in IST who have achieved superior academic records and who are from New York City or northern New Jersey. The Schachts created the scholarship with Ed Hintz, former chair of the Penn State Board of Trustees, and his wife.
