Human-Centered Design Guru to Speak Nov. 19

Donald Norman, author of Emotional Design: Why We Love (or Hate) Everything Things, wants designers to create products that are usable, practical and emotionally appealing.
Donald Norman, a professor of computer science, former executive of Apple’s Advanced Technology Group, and industry consultant, will argue for the design of products that are usable, practical and intrinsically appealing when he comes to Penn State Nov. 19.

His talk, “Emotional Design: The Principles,” is part of the Distinguished Lecture Series of the School of Information Sciences and Technology (IST).

A pioneer in human-centered design for products and services, Norman began his career building intelligent machines. He since has become an advocate for users who struggle with everything from programming DVD players to understanding automobiles’ dashboard controls.

The problem, Norman argues, is not with users but with the designers whose creations don’t correspond to how people actually use those tools or items.

In his most recent book, Emotional Design: Why We Love (or Hate) Everyday Things, Norman takes his argument further, asserting that usable products also must be aesthetically pleasing. “Products and systems that make you feel good are easier to deal with and produce more harmonious results,” Norman has written.

A professor at Northwestern University, Norman is cofounder of the Nielsen Norman Group, a consulting firm that helps companies design products and services. He also is one of the founders of the Cognitive Science Society and is a fellow in American Academy of Arts and Sciences.

Norman will speak at 3:30 p.m. in the Cybertorium, the Information Sciences and Technology Building.
