Industry Spotlight Series

Again this year the Career Services Center is presenting the Industry Spotlight Series. From February 2nd to February 12th we will highlight a different industry that students may enjoy learning more about. Representatives and recruiters from the following industries will share their experiences; Technology, Consulting, Insurance, Financial Services, Publishing, International Affairs/Business, Government, Pharmaceutical, and Retail – industries in which your students may someday be starting careers and will be represented at Spring Career Days on February 16-18, 2009.

Distinguished Lecturer: John Gero

John Gero will be giving a talk as part of the Raymond A. Bowers Distinguished Lecture Series titled "Recent Developments in Design Computing: Increasing Design Creativity."

Multicultural Internship Program

"The Multicultural Internship Program (MIP) assists multicultural students at Penn State with identifying and applying for internships related to their educational and career goals."

Please note, you must attend a MIP orientation workshop in order to participate.

IST Polls Experience Survey

Did you have a good experience at the polls in Tuesday? Wait in line for hours to vote? Good or bad, Penn State’s College of Information Sciences and Technology (IST) wants to know about it.

Researchers in the college have launched an online voter survey to gauge reaction to factors including voting equipment, election staff and atmosphere at the polling places.

The survey is available at: http://ist.psu.edu/voterexperience and will be open until midnight on Tuesday, Nov. 11.

Marine Crops Platoon Leaders Course

If you are looking for something to do this summer that will enhance your resume, give you unmatched leadership experience, and provide a super challenge, the Marine Corps platoon leader's course is for you. Below are some of the features of this program:

COLLEGE LOAN PAYBACK- $30,000 payback if you decide to join after graduation.

GUARANTEED FLIGHT- Sophomores through Grads can be guaranteed a pilot seat. This is a great thing to have "in your pocket" if you decide to accept your commission.

FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE PROGRAM (FAP)- Up to $5,200/year for up to 3 years.

2009 GEICO Achievement Award Program

The 2009 GEICO Achievement Award Program is now open! Next year, we will offer two $1,000 awards – one will go to a Penn State business major and the other to an IST student.

This program requires that students:

* Possess sophomore or junior status
* Have achieved at least a 3.0 overall GPA
* Are majoring in business or IST
* Have demonstrated leadership within their campus or community

Undergraduate Research Opportunities

The Office of Undergraduate Education is pleased to announce the following undergraduate research opportunities open to students at all Penn State campuses.

Poster and performance entries are invited for the 2009 Undergraduate Exhibition, to be held Wednesday, April 8, at the University Park Campus. Abstracts will be accepted beginning January 12 and must be submitted by Friday, March 6. Entry guidelines and forms are available at www.undergradresearch.psu.edu

NEW IST Student Organization - Web Science Club

We are happy to announce the formation of a new IST Student Organization - Web Science Club.

Web Science Club will will feature tutorials on emerging technologies such as XML and RDF, workships on web 2.0 topics, and student research presentations in the area of "web science" [emerging web technologies and applications].

While many of these topics are touched upon briefly in IST classes, this group will provide a focused environment in which students can expand their knowledge in specific web-related domains.

Scholarship Award Available for Juniors

Juniors: Apply Now for the Marcus C. Hansen IST Fellows Award

Lockheed Martin Integrated Systems & Global Services (IS&GS) will be awarding a $2,000 Marcus C. Hansen College of IST Fellows Award to five IST or SRA juniors. The recipients of this award will complete a paid summer internship from June through August 2009 with Lockheed Martin IS&GS.
