Labs and Facilities

The Applied Research Laboratory's (ARL) Synthetic Environment Applications (SEA) Laboratory incorporates a full immersion 3-D visualization capability. The facility provides 3-D projections onto a four wall enclosure and floor; hence, providing a complete immersion experience. In addition, the facility can be operated in a classified mode up to special access.

Atelier
The createIT Lab, formerly known as the Atelier, is dedicated to new technology and collaboration with nontraditional IST disciplines where students, visitors, and passersby can explore these technologies and see the progress of current projects. Current technologies include 3D printing (rapid prototyping), haptic devices, 3D scanning, and gaming consoles. Initial projects include collaborations with The National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC) and PSU's Department of Anthropology. The createIT Lab is located in the IST building's Atrium/Café area and is currently open to the public.

Extreme Events Laboratory
The Extreme Events Laboratory will consist of a centralized command center hosted in the IST building, a mobile command post in a van or equivalent vehicle, and various hand-held devices to allow individuals to act as observers and reporters. The laboratory will support campus-wide experiments involving humans as observers, distributed decision making and cognition, and crisis management. The laboratory will ultimately be used for a combination of research, education, and “table-top” training.

Laboratory for Intelligent Agents
Laboratory for Intelligent Agents: Development of intelligent agent and network science technologies—specifically, cognitively-inspired agents, market-based agents, trust, and relational networks—are the focus of this lab whose sponsors include Army Research Lab, Army Research Office, Defense Threat Reduction Agency, Office of Naval Research, and Lockheed Martin.  Cognitively-inspired agents and relational networks that assist decision makers in dealing with information overload could enhance homeland security efforts; market-based trust-aware agents that can interact with humans and electronic marketplaces can improve supply chain management and resource allocation.

Spatial Information and Intelligence Laboratory
The mission of the Spatial Information and Intelligence Laboratory is to create spatial-information computing systems that are interactive, multi-modal, and foster collaboration by groups. Such systems will enable even non-expert users to access highly-complicated geographical information resources and will facilitate decision making among teams. This lab hosts a 3-D, full-immersion visualization facility for experiments with situation displays and tactical decision-making. The National Science Foundation is a primary sponsor of this research.

User Science and Engineering (USE) Laboratory
User Science and Engineering (USE) Laboratory: The focus of this lab is the interdisciplinary work domain of emergency crisis management/crisis planning. In this lab, researchers are developing a scaled-world simulation, computer-aided support/intelligent systems to provide user-centered assistance for complex operations, and collaborative suites intended to enhance and facilitate the coordination, communication, and sharing of information when team members are required to be distributed across space and time.
